Our approach

Our team examines the critical transitions that occur in a multitude of engineering and natural systems such as thermoacoustic & aeroacoustic systems, clouds, and climate. Although these different systems may outwardly appear different, they are complex systems having turbulent flow where self-organization and emergence occurs. An overarching aim of our work is to uncover the common thread present in this diverse set of systems. To examine our research questions, we use a variety of methods including experiments, numerical modeling using reduced-order models, and application of mathematical techniques such as complex networks, machine learning, and time series analysis.
